A Sad Time for Elephants

Ever since I read Douglas Chadwick’s The Fate of the Elephant back in 1994, I’ve felt a particular interest in these magnificent creatures. So it was with a particularly large lump in my throat that I read yesterday’s front page New York Times story “Elephants Dying in Epic Frenzy As Ivory Fuels Wars and Profits.” According to the report, elephants are being slaughtered in record numbers for their ivory–more than ever. Ivory has become the new blood diamond, the latest “conflict resource.” It isn’t so-called subsistence poachers who are driving the slaughter but military forces from Uganda and other war-torn African countries. The long article is worth reading in its entirety, and is a reminder to all consumers with a conscience: don’t buy ivory. Ever.
